Home Depot

Yesterday, I asked her where Jesus lives. She replied, “hmmm. Home Depot!”

My mom said this is quite an appropriate answer since Jesus was a carpenter and where else would you find a manger in LA anyway?

Really, though, I think her answer has something to do with the guy who always accompanies her to Home Depot. The calm of our family, the one who exudes peace and love (and who is always up for a project). Her example of Him.

Because somewhere in between the screws and the brackets, she has come to realize that his love for her is binding. As he places washer rings on her fingers, she is known and adored. And she’s come to see that even the delight of the light-up washing machines (are they always on display for you, too?) cannot compare to the joy he finds in her.

Perhaps she already knows, that all of the lumber and the nails and the plants and the lightbulbs cannot create a home if Love does not also abide. Maybe, even, she’ll come to know that with Love we can build a home-of-sorts, wherever we go- a space bright with hope, filled with peace, where love will sing welcome. And my new favorite refrain: you are known, you are wanted, you are adored.
